Maintaining one’s moral compass in the face of challenges is a commendable quality. Upholding personal principles may not always be the easiest route, and I can attest to this from my own experiences. In the past, I was often labeled a “yes man.” I would diligently execute any task assigned by the boss exactly as instructed. Even when confronted with a heavy workload and tight deadlines, I would put in extra hours to ensure the project’s timely completion.

Over time, my approach to such situations has evolved, leading to positive outcomes. When a manager provides specific instructions for a task and I envision a more efficient method, I now seek clarification on the necessity of adhering to their exact approach. If the response is often a simple “Because I want it done this way,” I start looking for other job opportunities while still completing the project using the more efficient approach.

Since adopting this approach, I’ve witnessed notable results. Supportive leaders often commend my innovative thinking, expressing satisfaction with how I handle challenging situations. On the other hand, some “bosses” (a distinction I’ll delve into in a separate article post about leadership) have criticized me for not strictly following their instructions.
