Embracing Inner Potential and Disregarding External Judgment

Many times, we judge people based on their looks and miss what God sees in them. Honestly, I catch myself doing this every day.

Looking in the mirror, I sometimes see someone who might seem too young to lead a team or an aging person who missed out on great opportunities because fear held me back from listening to God.

At times, I might see a guy in the mirror who looks worn out and too tired to keep going. But you know what? That’s not how God sees me.

God doesn’t focus on how things look on the outside; He sees what’s truly inside.

A true go-getter who never backs down. When told “no,” it’s just fuel to try even harder. Someone with the knowledge to tackle anything they desire.

He sees the person he crafted—the one he designed me to be. It’s like when God picked David to be king—intentional and purposeful.

Taking a peek at a few verses in 1 Samuel Chapter 16, you’ll see that Samuel initially thought Jesse’s eldest son would be the chosen king.

Chances are, there were a couple of reasons for that. The eldest son was likely strong, had standout features, and just seemed to fit the part perfectly.

What Samuel missed out on was getting a glimpse of his personality.

Just like how it takes spending several days with someone to see their personality, Samuel faced a similar challenge.

Once God said, “Not this one,” I can imagine Samuel feeling a tad let down.

He went through all of Jesse’s kids, and every time God said, “Not this one,”

So, Samuel inquired, “Do you have any other children?” Jesse replied, “There’s one more; he’s out in the field with the flocks.”

They summoned David, and the Bible portrays him as “ruddy.” And you know what? It goes a step further, describing him as “God-like” too.

God doesn’t judge a book by its cover. So, why do we often judge ourselves and others based on appearances? It’s something worth pondering.

Ever come across someone in a suit and think, “Wow, that person must be important”? It’s a common reaction.

Ever spotted someone strolling in ripped jeans and an old T-shirt on the street and thought, “Glad, I’m not like him”? It happens, but maybe there’s more to the story.

I came across this interesting story in a book where the author met a big investor in Pixar animation. What caught his eye? The guy had holes in his pants near the calf—two small holes on each side for both legs. It’s quite a unique detail, don’t you think?

The author remarked, “This guy’s got enough money to own a piece of Pixar, yet he’s strolling around with holes in his pants. If I were him, I’d probably just splurge on some new trousers.” It’s a quirky observation about wealth and personal style.

As the author got to know Steve Jobs better, he realized that, despite caring about his outward appearance, those tiny holes in his pants didn’t alter who Jobs truly was. It’s a reminder that even small imperfections don’t define a person.

Those holes in Steve’s pants? They were there because he pulled up his socks multiple times a day. He’d grab them through his pants to get them just right. It’s a unique quirk that shows the little things can tell a bigger story.

How we look on the outside doesn’t alter what God has planned for us. It doesn’t shift His intentions or what He wants us to achieve. The real substance lies within.

Have you ever found yourself sizing up your worth based on how you look on the outside?

I lost count of how many times I used to stare in the mirror and say, “I can’t do this” or “I’m not good enough.”

To be completely honest with you, that mindset held me back from starting my own business for many years. I just didn’t feel “good enough” to take that leap.

Do you tune in to God’s voice, embracing the belief that we can achieve anything? Or do you let your inner critic keep you on the couch, whispering that “you’re not good enough”? It’s a choice between faith and self-doubt.

Today is your day to make a move!

Rise, gaze into the mirror, and witness the genuine person that God has crafted you to be.

The vibrant, outgoing, and gorgeous person he designed has been right there all along.

Just like David was there all along.

Today, I challenge you to step out of your comfort zone and try something new. It doesn’t matter what it is; just push yourself to do something you’ve never done before.

I’ve decided to pen a letter to myself, highlighting all my qualities and why I can overcome challenges. It’s a small step with a big impact.

But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
