Trump’s Comeback: New Routes Ahead for Trucking and Infrastructure

Donald Trump next to a semi-truck, representing trucking policies.

Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines because the political highway is about to get bumpy. After a jaw-dropping return to the White House, Donald Trump is ready to grab the wheel again. His second term promises big changes for trucking, infrastructure, and just about everything with a set of wheels.

While the Republican victory brought cheers from many corners of the business world, the trucking industry is waiting to see if this comeback will mean smoother roads or more potholes. Let’s dig into what’s on the horizon—and why every trucker, fleet manager, and logistics nerd should buckle up.

A Historic U-Turn in Politics

First, a quick pit stop in history: Trump’s return to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue makes him only the second U.S. president to serve nonconsecutive terms, joining the “legendary” Grover Cleveland. But unlike Cleveland, Trump isn’t riding back into office on a horse and buggy. His campaign, fueled by seven battleground state wins, ran on a platform that aimed to dismantle Biden’s electric vehicle (EV) initiatives, slow emissions mandates, and push for more domestic energy production.

And love him or hate him, Trump didn’t shy away from sharing his vision. “We want people to buy electric cars,” he said during Meet the Press, “but if they want gas-powered, hybrids, or even horse-drawn carriages—they gotta have that choice.” (Okay, maybe he didn’t mention carriages, but you get the point.)

Trade Policies: New Tariffs, Old Problems

Let’s talk tariffs—the word that makes economists twitch and freight brokers sweat. Trump plans to reinstate and expand tariffs on imports from trade giants like China, Mexico, and Canada. This “America First” approach is aimed at boosting domestic manufacturing. But here’s the kicker: these tariffs could also make goods more expensive, meaning fewer shipments, fewer trucks on the road, and potentially thinner wallets for trucking companies.

With the freight market already in a slump, experts are raising a red flag. Trucking is the lifeblood of the $1.7 trillion U.S. transportation industry, and adding financial strain could deepen the pain. If you thought the race to secure loads was tight now, just wait—this trade war might make finding freight as rare as a decent truck stop burger.

Rolling Back Environmental Policies: EVs in the Rearview

In what might be one of the most polarizing policy shifts, Trump is planning to pump the brakes on Biden’s EV revolution. Under Biden, we saw billions poured into charging infrastructure, EV tax incentives, and stricter emissions regulations. Trump’s approach? A sharp U-turn.

His team has hinted at slashing EV subsidies, scaling back emissions standards to 2019 levels, and even imposing tariffs on global battery materials to encourage domestic production. While this might give diesel trucks a little breathing room, it could also slow down investments in greener technologies like electric freight trucks and autonomous EV fleets.

But hey, this isn’t just about trucks. It’s about consumer choice—or as Trump might say, “Let people drive what they want, even if it’s a gas-guzzling beast that gets 8 miles to the gallon.” Practical? Maybe. Controversial? Absolutely.

Infrastructure: Permitting on Overdrive

Infrastructure is one of those words that can either put you to sleep or get you revved up—depending on how much caffeine you’ve had. Trump is vowing to speed up the permitting process for mega-construction projects, especially those with over $1 billion in investment.

This could be a game-changer for roads, bridges, and ports. Imagine fewer bottlenecks at ports or smoother highways without 15 years of waiting for environmental studies to clear. But (and it’s a big but), critics are worried this “streamlined” process might sideline critical environmental safeguards.

Trump’s approach is like ordering fast food: quick and satisfying, but you might regret the long-term impact. Whether his permitting plan becomes a win for trucking or a PR disaster remains to be seen.

The Truck Parking Crisis: Still Stuck in Neutral

Here’s a problem every trucker knows all too well—finding a safe place to park at the end of a long haul. The $200 million promised for truck parking? Still sitting in Congress like a stalled rig on the side of the road. Despite bipartisan support for addressing this crisis, lawmakers just couldn’t get it done before the fiscal 2025 funding deadlines.

What does this mean? More truckers pulling over on shoulders, more dangerous parking situations, and more frustration in an industry that literally keeps the country moving. If Trump’s administration wants a quick win with the trucking community, solving the parking crisis would be a good start. After all, even the best rig can’t run without a place to rest.

Meet Sean Duffy: DOT’s New Boss

Trump’s pick for Secretary of Transportation is none other than Sean Duffy. Yep, the guy from MTV’s The Real World: Boston. But don’t let the reality TV background fool you—Duffy served eight years in Congress and has a solid track record on transportation issues.

ATA President Chris Spear gave Duffy a glowing endorsement, calling him “an exceptional choice” for his focus on pro-trucking policies like reducing congestion and improving highway safety. “Roads and bridges are our shop floor,” Spear said, reminding everyone just how critical infrastructure is to the trucking industry.

Let’s hope Duffy’s DOT leadership is more action-packed policy and less reality TV drama. (Unless it’s Storage Wars: DOT Edition, because who wouldn’t watch that?)

Biden’s Legacy: The Cathedral of Infrastructure

Before Biden handed over the keys, his administration celebrated the achievements of the $1.2 trillion Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA). From repairing bridges to modernizing railways and ports, this legislation was touted as a once-in-a-generation investment in the nation’s mobility.

Outgoing Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg called these projects “cathedrals”—monuments to long-term progress that take years (sometimes decades) to complete. But despite the lofty rhetoric, some critical initiatives were left unfinished. The $200 million for truck parking? Still sitting there. Funding for disaster recovery after severe weather events? Also stuck.

If Trump wants to leave his mark, he has plenty of opportunities to pick up where Biden left off.

The Trucking Industry’s Mood: Cautious Optimism

Let’s face it—truckers are used to navigating tough roads. And while many in the industry are optimistic about Trump’s second term, there’s still plenty of skepticism. From labor policies to trade tariffs, every decision in Washington ripples through the trucking world.

ATA’s Chris Spear has made it clear that the industry won’t blindly support every move. Protecting independent contractors and addressing workforce challenges remain top priorities. Truckers want to see real action, not just headlines.

The Road Ahead

As Trump takes the wheel, the trucking and infrastructure industries are in for a wild ride. Whether it’s trade wars, environmental rollbacks, or infrastructure overhauls, the decisions made in the next four years will shape the future of America’s roads—and the people who drive them.

The big questions remain: Will we finally solve the truck parking crisis? How will tariffs impact freight demand? And will Trump’s policies ultimately strengthen or strain the trucking industry? One thing’s for sure—it’s going to be a ride worth watching.

So, buckle up, folks. The road ahead might be bumpy, but it’s sure to be interesting. And if you’re a trucker, keep your logbook updated, your CB radio handy, and your parking spot secured—it’s about to get real out there.
