“The risk of life-threatening storm surge is on the rise for parts of the Florida Peninsula starting the night of October 8 or early October 9,” the hurricane center warns. “Residents, heed local officials’ advice and evacuate if you’re told to do so. Seriously, don’t test your luck!”
NASA and SpaceX have hit the brakes on the October 10 launch of the Europa Clipper mission due to Milton’s antics, but they have some breathing room with launch opportunities extending until November 6.
The Weight of the Past
Let’s not forget: Milton is the second major storm to hit Florida in just weeks and the fifth hurricane to impact the U.S. this year. Remember Hurricane Helene? That storm took out at least 227 lives in Florida’s Big Bend area and spread chaos all the way into the Appalachian Mountains (WUSF ).
