What I learned about getting my pilot’s license!

Exploring the Path to Multi-Engine Flight Certification

Due to a combination of recent challenges, a hectic schedule, and a tinge of embarrassment, I feel compelled to open up about my recent experiences. In late April, my wife and I made the exciting decision to purchase a twin-engine Cessna airplane. Unfortunately, our usage of it has been limited, and the story behind it is nothing short of a rollercoaster.

Initially, I was working with a local flight instructor, assisting him in obtaining his multi-engine instructor qualification utilizing our aircraft. However, approximately a month and a half after receiving his instructor’s license, I received an unexpected call from him on a Wednesday. He shared, “Hey Dan, do you have a moment to talk?” He went on, “I’ve decided to step back from being an instructor. I’ll still manage my flight school, but I won’t be taking on instructing duties.” Despite my attempts to persuade him otherwise, I couldn’t change his mind. It was a disheartening moment, to say the least.

Faced with this unforeseen setback, I embarked on a quest to find another instructor who could guide me directly toward achieving my multi-engine certification. Yet, the responses I kept encountering were consistent:

“We’d be delighted to assist you once you’ve secured your single-engine certification.” Though I sensed a larger plan at play, it eluded my understanding at that moment.

So, I switched gears once more and found another local instructor to assist me in obtaining my single-engine certification. Despite feeling a bit cramped in those small planes during my initial lesson, I realized that I wanted to pursue my multi-engine certification. I promptly scheduled a check ride for September with the only local examiner available. I managed to pass, but it was a close call.

While continuing to refine my skills with single-engine planes, I began searching for a multi-engine fast-track program the day after passing my single-engine check ride. Until mid-January, most programs were fully booked. However, through a stroke of luck or perhaps divine intervention, I stumbled upon a school in Florida offering a fast-track program with an opening in mid-October.

Without hesitation, I signed up, arranged flights, secured a rental car, and booked accommodation. There wasn’t much I could do before arriving there.

Upon reaching my destination, I swiftly obtained my high-performance rating and immersed myself in multi-engine training. For four demanding days, I spent over eight hours a day in a multi-engine aircraft, engaging in numerous stalls, engine-off scenarios, over 50 landings, and extensive ground school.

In the evenings, I diligently caught up on business matters. My incredible wife, Jenna, managed our household and provided unwavering support. I cannot express enough gratitude for her and our kids.

It was an exhausting week, to say the least. There was even a moment when the instructor shut off one engine while we were flying over the ocean.

I quickly noticed the shift and took immediate action to ensure our safety.

Two days prior to the scheduled check ride, my original examiner fell ill and was unable to conduct any exams. Fortunately, the school managed to find a replacement, an experienced corporate pilot affiliated with the New York Yankees.

During the check ride, just as we were nearing the conclusion, a minor landing gear malfunction arose. Instead of three green lights indicating the gear was down, we had only two. Following established procedures and after a flyby inspection by the tower, we determined it was safe to land.

The landing itself was flawless, and the gear held up.

I am profoundly grateful for my support system at home, especially Jenna, whose unwavering support made this journey possible. She is an extraordinary partner.

Reflecting on this experience, I now comprehend some of the reasons for these unexpected twists and turns. It became clear that God intended for me to learn that perseverance can lead to achievement. While you can inspire others to improve, you cannot force them to do the right thing.

Certain situations demand slowing down to avoid overlooking crucial steps. Additionally, my respect for multi-engine planes has deepened as I’ve personally witnessed their capabilities and agility.

In the end, I’ve learned to trust in God’s plan, no matter how unpredictable it may seem. I’ve also gained a profound appreciation for the importance of a robust support system.

Never take it for granted.

In conclusion, remember that where there’s a will, there’s a way. Keep pushing forward, trust the journey, and rely on the people who believe in you.
