FMCSA Cancels Registration for Two Electronic Logging Devices

FMCSA cancels registration for two electronic logging devices

The FMCSA recently caused a stir in the electronic logging device (ELD) realm with a major announcement. On May 21, they revoked the registration of two ELDs: Blue Star ELD and ELD Mandate Plus. If you’re currently using these devices, it’s time to switch gears and either resort to paper logs or find alternative software solutions promptly. By July 20, it’s imperative to have compliant ELDs up and running.

Reasons Behind the Revocation

The FMCSA did not delve into specifics, opting instead to vaguely state that these ELDs failed to meet the minimum requirements as outlined in the regulations. This lack of transparency might leave industry enthusiasts scratching their heads, as FMCSA typically keeps the details under wraps.

Responses from Affected Companies

Ratan Baid, CEO of ELD Mandate, is actively working to rectify the situation and bring their software back into compliance. On the other hand, Blue Star ELD has remained silent about their next steps.

Transition Period

Fortunately, there’s a silver lining for carriers and drivers amidst the chaos: a generous 60-day grace period to make the transition. During this time, enforcers are advised to ease off drivers who lack proper records or are using non-compliant ELDs. Instead, they will verify hours using paper logs or alternative software options. This period allows for a smoother transition while ensuring compliance with regulations.

Rising Compliance Violations

ELD compliance violations have been on the rise since 2020, according to RigDig BI data. However, these violations have not yet reached the peak levels seen in 2018 when the ELD mandate initially took effect. This indicates the industry’s adaptability even as enforcement becomes increasingly stringent.

The Need for Vigilance and Adaptability

Remaining up-to-date with FMCSA’s regulations regarding ELDs requires constant vigilance and adaptability. The recent removal of Blue Star ELD and ELD Mandate Plus from the approved list serves as a reminder of the rapid evolution within the regulatory landscape. This abrupt change underscores the imperative for carriers to respond swiftly, staying attuned to evolving regulations and ensuring strict adherence to safety protocols.

Proactive Compliance Measures

To maintain compliance, carriers should:

  • Regularly Monitor FMCSA’s Registered Devices: Ensuring fleet equipment is compliant mitigates non-compliance risks and fosters a culture of safety.
  • Implement Robust Compliance Protocols: Open communication within the organization and ongoing driver training are crucial.
  • Leverage Technology Solutions: Real-time monitoring and reporting tools can streamline compliance efforts and provide valuable insights into fleet operations.

Commitment to Safety

Maintaining compliance with FMCSA’s ELD regulations is not just a legal requirement—it’s a commitment to ensuring the safety of drivers and the general public. By prioritizing compliance and embracing a proactive approach, carriers can avoid regulatory penalties and cultivate a culture of safety and excellence within their organization.
